Staying in Shape With a Busy Schedule The Treadmill Solution

We all want to be in shape, and we recognize as well the health benefits of regular exercise, but how do we do that when we work long days, day in and day out? If you're a busy professional, you may be frustrated in your attempts to get in shape and stay healthy by your overly busy schedule. Many days, you wouldn't be able to take an hour off to go to a gym anyway, and by the time you can finally leave the office, the local gym is closed.

At the same time, you're getting tired of having to buy successively larger sizes of clothing, being winded when you arrive for important meetings and finding yourself exhausted at the end of every day - and sometimes even at the start of the next one. You know that getting in shape would help with all of this, but how to find the time?
 
An in-office treadmill may be the answer you're looking for. It fits neatly and unobtrusively in a corner of the office, either yours or perhaps in an unused space such as an empty office. Treadmills are also very versatile in that people of all fitness levels can benefit, from simply walking for those just starting out, to speed and duration interval training for the uber fit! Training times as short as 15 minutes per day can bring significant benefits, and the time of day can vary to accommodate changing schedules. There's even ways of making your time on the treadmill productive, from listening to language tapes to simply catching up on the news and some models even come with a desk so you can work while you walk. Finally, there's the obvious benefit of year-round training. If you live in a colder climate, you can run in heated comfort on your treadmill in mid-winter while watching others shiver on the sidewalk outside.

While we'd all like to be slimmer, and really rock that tailored suit or dress, there are of course many health benefits to getting and staying in shape as well.

With the schedule you work, and the demands your position places on you, you're no stranger to stress. Most of us know that exercise releases endorphins, which give us a natural high, but did you also know that exercise generates higher levels of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine? These brain chemicals can help to lower stress levels, give us better rest, and keep us more alert.

Serotonin is a mood enhancer that fights depression and stress and helps to give us an overall sense of well-being. It also helps us to regulate our appetite and can improve our sleep, not just the regularity, but the depth of our rest, so we wake feeling more refreshed. Dopamine is a reward chemical, and improves our sense of satisfaction with our life as well as helping us to stay focused, and avoid 'brain fog'. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that makes us more alert, and also helps to fight depression. Best of all, unlike endorphins which wear off within an hour or two of exercise, your body will experience permanently higher levels of all three of these brain chemicals with regular exercise.

In addition, you'll of course strengthen your cardiovascular system, tone muscles, gain greater energy and, combined with a disciplined diet, lose weight!
You'll have the benefit of being able to exercise whenever you can clear as little as 15 minutes in your schedule, even if this is at a different time each day. If you don't have shower facilities available, you can simply change in to some sweats and do a low intensity workout then change right back in to your business clothes. If you do have shower facilities, then you can get an intense workout, and the benefits from it, at any time of day, and be showered and ready to go back to conquering the world 15 minutes later.

There are many makes and models of treadmill for all budgets, and a wide variety of features as well. If you're in or near a large city, chances are there's an exercise equipment company nearby, and failing that, you can buy online and have it shipped to you.

You're busy. Very busy. And it's easy to get so focused on the demands of your job that you lose sight of the long-term, but if you don't take steps now to start looking after yourself, you'll pay for it later.
